Theoretical Approaches in Mathematics Education

The symposium is a meeting between invited participants from various countries to discuss/debate/put-together ideas and issues relating to how theories are or can be used to investigate teaching practices and teaching development in mathematics.  We wish not just to present each participant’s own work/ideas but to provide a forum in which we can really listen to each other, share ideas and build new ones.

We see three dimensions in this work.  The first is our principle focus on theories: we want to be able to bring to the table a range of theories, theoretical perspectives and theoretical frameworks.  The second is the substantive focus of our theoretical work, that is the teaching practices or teachers of mathematics at both primary and secondary school levels.  We are also interested in the use of theory to describe/explain/understand etc. how teaching develops and to question and inform the professional development of teachers and teacher educators.
